Trans Fats to be Eliminated From US Food Manufacturing

The FDA announced this week that they will be requiring US food manufacturers to phase out the use of partially hydrogenated oils, which are the primary source of trans fats in our diet. Trans fats are known to clog the arteries and raise the levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) in the blood. Partially hydrogenated oils are used in processed foods to increase the shelf life of the product. The Aspire New Brunswick is as excited as the folks at that the FDA plans to have them completely phased out in three years.

Doctors have estimated that phasing out these oils could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart attacks per year. These fats have been used since the 1950s and the FDA estimates that eliminating them could cost up to $14 billion but could also save up to $242 billion. Public health officials are applauding the decision.
